Feeding and breeding

Food and diving

The beluga’s main food is octopus, krill and various species of fish such as salmon. They may sometimes pursue fish up large rivers. Belugas dive for 1-2 minutes at a time, down to a depth of 300 m.

Breeding

Mating takes place when the ice thaws. Pregnancy takes about 14 months, and the resulting calf is 1.5 m long and 80 kg in weight. Belugas are grey or brown at birth but they lighten with age and when fully grown they are pale yellow or pure white.
