Vegetables and fruit

Next time you are in the food store, take a look at the vegetables and the fruit. You will notice that most of the fruit and vegetables are imported from other countries. Sometimes they are imported because they can’t grow in your country, and sometimes they are imported because growing the vegetables or fruit in another country is cheaper.

A bad thing with importing fruit and vegetables is that the airplane, the boat or the lorry that brings them to the store emits fumes that have a bad impact on our environment. If we bought more fruit and vegetables from our own country, less fumes due to transportation would be emitted.

Did you know that almost half of the salad in stores in the UK is imported?

Here are some good tips on how you can help the environment when you’re in the food store:

·         Always buy (or let your parents buy) vegetables or fruit that have been grown in your own country or as close to your country as possible. If you can’t see where the fruit or vegetables are from, ask someone who works in the store!

·         You can also think like this about any product at all. What about the sweets you eat, for example? Where are they from? Are there any sweets that come from your own country?

·         Have you tried to plant your own vegetables, flowers or herbs? It’s great fun and of course even better and cheaper than buying them in the store. Do you want to know more about how you can become a mini-farmer? Click here!
